Buy White Wine Online – Discover the Best Wines for Every Taste & Occasion

A mild summer evening on the terrace, the last rays of sunlight shimmering golden in your glass as you take the first sip of your fine wine – cool, refreshing and with exactly the right balance of fruit and acidity.

White wine is more than just a drink; white wine is an experience. A light, refreshing pleasure. A moment of enjoyment. And it is very different from the more spicy and intense red wine.

Whether you are enjoying dinner with friends, a relaxed evening for two or a special meal, the right choice makes all the difference.

But what makes a good white wine? How do you find the perfect bottle? And how should you enjoy it properly?

Here at the Heinemann Shop, you will learn everything you need to know to find the perfect white wine for your taste and every occasion.

We also offer a carefully selected range of particularly popular white wines.

What makes a good white wine?

A good white wine is characterised by its balance. The acidity should be lively but not too aggressive. The fruit should be present without being overpowering.

The wine’s origin also plays a decisive role:

Cooler growing regions such as Germany and France produce delicate, elegant white wines, while sun-drenched regions such as California and Australia often produce more opulent and therefore more intense wines.

But it is not only about the taste – a good white wine can also offer a certain complexity and develop when exposed to air, making the drinking experience more exciting with every sip.

Important factors in the quality of a white wine:

  • Grape variety: Riesling provides fine acidity, Chardonnay adds body and Sauvignon Blanc delivers freshness.
  • Soil & Climate: Slate contributes minerality, limestone brings elegance and warm regions emphasise fruit.
  • Vinification: Stainless steel preserves freshness, while oak casks provide complexity.

A good white wine is therefore much more than just an attractive label. But which white wine best suits your preferences?

Which white wine is the best?

The question of which white wine is best is as individual as your taste.

While many people swear by vibrant Rieslings, others love buttery Chardonnays or crisp Sauvignon Blancs. The answer therefore depends largely on your personal taste and the occasions on which you would like to enjoy your white wine.

A refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, for example, is ideal as an aperitif, while a complex Chardonnay can be the perfect accompaniment to fine cuisine.

Or would you definitely like to choose a good white wine from Germany?

Which is the best German white wine?

White wines are very popular in Germany, especially Riesling. This is hardly surprising, as Germany is home to several renowned wine-growing regions. The best-known and most popular regions for German wine production are:

  • Moselle: Light and delicate, with fine fruity sweetness.
  • Rheingau: Fuller-bodied, mineral style.
  • Palatinate: Fruit-driven, often with exotic notes.
  • Franconia: Silvaner with spicy elegance.

Heinemann tip: Why not try a Grosses Gewächs (GG) from a renowned VDP winery? This is the Champions League of German white wine. For example, this Riesling from the Robert Weil estate, which we can highly recommend.

Which white wine goes with which dish?

Connoisseurs have long known that not all white wine is the same. From delicate to full-bodied, here is a small selection with suitable recommendations for white wines to accompany dishes and special occasions, which may make your decision a little easier:

  • Riesling – Germany’s signature wine, with lively acidity and intense fruit. Perfect with sushi, Asian dishes or light fish dishes.
  • Chardonnay – From elegant and mineral-driven styles such as Chablis to buttery and opulent wines from California. It pairs wonderfully with shellfish, poultry or creamy pasta dishes.
  • Sauvignon Blanc – Fresh and grassy, with exotic notes. Ideal as an aperitif or with fresh salads and goat’s cheese.
  • Silvaner – An underrated all-rounder with gentle spiciness. Perfect with asparagus, vegetarian dishes or mild cheese.
  • Pinot Grigio / Pinot Gris – Fruity, full-bodied and uncomplicated. Pairs well with antipasti, pasta or poultry.

How much does a good bottle of white wine cost

Good quality comes at a price, but it does not have to be expensive.

As you already know, the quality of a white wine is determined by many factors, including the location of the vineyards, the age of the vines and the care taken by the winemaker.

In terms of price, good white wine can be divided into the following categories:

  • Good white wine for everyday enjoyment: €8 to €15.
  •  White wine for special occasions: €20 to €50.
  • Top wines: €50 and upwards (Grosses Gewächs, Premier Cru, Grand Cru).

Heinemann tip: It is better to invest in a high-quality white wine costing €15–20 than in a product from the bottom shelf of the supermarket. You will taste the difference.

How should you drink white wine?

The way you enjoy your white wine can have a significant influence on the tasting experience. A perfectly chilled wine allows its aromas to develop fully, while the wrong glass, for example, can flatten its subtle nuances.

These are the general recommendations for enjoying white wine:

  • Temperature: 8–12°C. Too cold means little aroma; too warm makes the wine taste overly alcoholic.
  • Choice of glass: Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are best served in slender glasses, while Chardonnay benefits from larger glasses.
  • Storage: Store in a dark place at a constant temperature of 10–14°C, lying down if sealed with a natural cork.
  • Decanting? Not necessary for young wines, but useful for mature Chardonnays.

As white wine is an alcoholic beverage, responsible and moderate consumption should of course be a matter of course.

White wine: sweet, off-dry or dry? The difference explained

Whether a wine tastes dry, sweet or fresh is determined by its level of residual sugar:

  • Dry (<9 g/l sugar) – Fresh, crisp and classic. Often with pronounced acidity that provides a pleasant freshness. Perfect for lovers of minimalist wines.
  • Off-dry / Feinherb (9–18 g/l) – Fruitier, with pleasant sweetness without being overpowering. These wines often appear more harmonious and balanced, with a gentle sweetness that accentuates the fruit.
  • Medium-sweet / Sweet (>18 g/l) – Ideal with Asian dishes or desserts. Notes of honey, ripe fruit and exotic spices often dominate, making the wine particularly smooth.
