Scotch whisky rich in tradition: For many, simply the best whisky in the world

Scottish whisky is famous for its complex aromas – and for a typically Scottish production method: The barley malt used in many Scotch whiskies is partly kiln-dried over a peat fire, which gives the whisky an especially rich and smoky flavour. Setting aside these special features, Scotch whiskies are characterised by complex flavours that fully develop over the course of years of barrel maturation. Because Scottish whisky must be stored in oak barrels for a minimum of three years - and it must be stored in Scotland, because the designation Scotch whisky is purely a designation of origin: Scotch may only be distilled in Scottish distilleries.

Over 100 distilleries are located between the Highlands and the Scottish islands alone. Additional important whisky regions include Speyside, Lowlands, Campbeltown and the Island of Islay where Scotch Islay Mist with its almost salty aroma is produced.

Great taste resulting from a centuries-old production method - Scottish whisky types

Scotch whisky is classified as several different whisky products:

  • Single malt Scotch whisky and blended malt Scotch whisky are distilled exclusively from malted barley and water. A single malt originates from a single distillery, while at least two single malts from different distilleries are cut for a blended malt.
  • Single grain Scotch whisky and blended grain Scotch whisky may also include, in addition to barley malt, unmalted barley and grain mixes. Grain Scotch whiskies are mainly used for scotch blends.
  • Blended Scotch whisky is a cut of various whisky products and includes at least one single malt and one or more grains.

The Scotch Whisky Regulation monitors the impeccable quality of Scottish whiskies. Among other things, it ensures the age information for a blend always refers to the youngest whisky it contains. So, an 18 or 21-year-old Scotch whisky may also include vintages that are much older.
