Complex fragrances – how perfumes are compiled

Whether it’s an intense perfume, a classic eau de toilette or a light splash of cologne – each and every perfume has its own unique scent, and each perfume unfolds individually depending on the wearer. Professional perfumers influence the way a perfume unfolds by combining different notes: 

  • The top note is the primary, dominating scent that is noticed as soon as you apply the perfume. Generally, the top note of a perfume is a light, fresh scent such as citrus or bergamot.
  • The middle note or heart note is what gives the perfume its character. Once the initial light yet intensive top note has evaporated, the longer lasting middle note takes over. This often has a floral character.
  • The base note is like a ‘stage floor’ on which the perfume unfolds its full character. It develops slowly, and generally consists of warm, heavy scents such as musk or vanilla.
