What's the difference between Whisky and Whiskey?

When it comes to the spelling of whisky, there's a discussion that's often had: with or without the "e"? Whisky and whiskey are both legitimate spellings - which differ depending on the country of origin. If it is destilled in Ireland or the United States, it is referred to as whiskey. Scottish, Canadian and most other whiskies are spelled without the "e". That's the small but subtle difference!

Whisky online kaufen.

What is whisky - and what is whiskey?

First of all, to clarify the terms: the difference lies not only in the spelling, but also in the origin and style. “Whisky” without an “e” traditionally stands for Scottish and Japanese whisky. “Whiskey” with an “e”, on the other hand, is used in Ireland and the USA.

Both variants are produced by distilling grain, but the differences in the production process, maturation and the types of grain used result in very different flavors.

  • Whisky (e.g. from Scotland or Japan) is usually peatier, smokier and more complex.
  • Whiskey (from Ireland or the USA) is often milder, sweeter and more accessible.

You can find out more in our special categories: Scotch Whisky, Irish Whiskey, Bourbon Whisky, Japanese Whisky.

Scotch or Whisky?

“Scotch” is simply short for “Scotch whisky”, i.e. whisky from Scotland. It is regarded as the original form of whisky and enjoys a great reputation worldwide. Regions such as the Highlands, Islay and Speyside are particularly well-known. Each produces its own style - from peaty and smoky to fruity and floral.

Anyone who has ever tasted a Macallan from Speyside knows exactly what elegance in a glass means. For fans of smoky notes, on the other hand, a glass of Highland Park from Orkney offers an unforgettable taste experience.

Why is whisky considered healthy?

We admit: Alcohol is never a health product and should always be consumed in moderation.

But whisky does contain some interesting properties. Polyphenols from oak, antioxidant substances and no added sugar make it a comparatively “pure” stimulant.

Studies suggest that moderate amounts of whisky can have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. But as always, the key lies in moderation.

How to drink whisky properly?

If you ask us: whisky deserves more attention, more calm, more deceleration.

You can enjoy it neat - at room temperature, in a nosing glass that concentrates the aromas. A few drops of water can reveal hidden nuances. If you prefer it mild, drink it “on the rocks” - with ice. Cocktails? That's also possible: a Jameson is excellent in a whiskey sour or a classic Old Fashioned.

Just a few years ago, it was frowned upon among connoisseurs to enjoy whisky on ice or not to serve it in what appeared to be the right glass. Today, the rule is: drink whisky the way you like it best!

Experimenting with whisky can be a lot of fun and provide the odd taste surprise.

How expensive should a good whisky be?

Whisky is like art - the price is not the only determinant of quality.

You can get remarkable bottles from around 30 to 40 euros, especially from independent distilleries. The price increases with ageing time, rarity and brand status. The important thing is to choose according to your taste, not the label.

Our tip for beginners: Jameson Irish Whiskey - round, accessible, perfect for starters. If you want more depth, go for a Highland Park 14 year old or Macallan Double Cask.

What is the world's most expensive whisky?

Some whiskies reach astronomical prices - such as the Macallan Fine & Rare 60 Years, which was auctioned for over €1.7 million in 2019. These collector's items are rare works of art and not everyday drinks. Nevertheless, they are fascinating. They tell a story of decades of maturation, perfect craftsmanship and absolute dedication.

Which whisky tastes best?

Taste is subjective - but a few classics convince almost every palate:

Our tip: If you really want to understand whisky, try different styles, regions and maturations. Tastings offer a wonderful opportunity for a journey of discovery.

Which is the best cheap whisky?

There are also great drops for under 30 euros.

Cheap doesn't mean bad - especially when it comes to young whiskies that are cleverly composed.

Conclusion: Whisky is culture, craft and adventure - buy online now

Whisky tells stories from distant lands, reveals centuries-old craftsmanship, surprises with depth and nuances that make every sip something special.

From the green hills of Ireland to the heights of Japan, from the stormy coasts of Scotland to the vast plains of Kentucky: Whisky brings the world into your glass.

Whether as a stylish gift, as a companion for special moments or as a conscious indulgence after a long day's travel - a good whisky gives peace, character and a bit of luxury in life.

And the next time you raise your glass, you may feel it again - that moment: the scent of oak, a hint of peat smoke, the gentle clink of the glass - and the feeling that everything is just right now.

Whisky is a ritual. A trip around the world in a tumbler. A lifestyle for connoisseurs.
