Munich brewers are said to have developed pale bottom-fermented lager beers in the 19th century as a counterpart to the stronger, hop-accentuated Pilsen-style beers. Pilsner is still the most popular beer in Germany today, but pale lager is already in second place. And in Bavaria, the style is even ahead of pilsner in first place on the popularity scale.
